Our 10 Favorite College Baseball Team Nicknames

You may not have caught our last post, but it made us realize that if for no other reason than that we love to argue, lists are really fun.

So, since the college baseball season is in full swing, we thought it'd be appropriate to spend a few hours haggling over some rankings -- but not the usual polls. No, instead we thought we'd focus on the really important stuff: team nicknames. Let the controversy -- and the bragging rights -- begin.

10. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers

Location: Chickasha, OK

Level: NAIA

Conference: Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC)

2016 record: 48-13

What it is: A "drover" is someone who moves a bunch of animals a long distance, so this is a nod to the cattle-driving history of the Chickasha region. Toughness and mobility...a great combo.

9. The Rock (Slippery Rock University)

Location: Slippery Rock, PA

Level: NCAA Division II

Conference: Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)

2016 record: 13-36

What it is: Um, as far as we can tell, it's...well...a rock. Sorry -- "The" Rock. Simple, powerful...we love it.

8. The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers

Location: Golden, CO

Level: NCAA Division II

Conference: Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)

2016 record: 29-15

What it is: You know, someone who digs ore out of the ground. These guys are engineers, after all.

7. The Evansville University Purple Aces

Location: Evansville, IN

Level: NCAA Division I

Conference: Missouri Valley Conference (MVC)

2016 record: 29-27

What it is: It's like it sounds: the best card in the deck. But here's the real story.

6.  The Tufts University Jumbos

Location: Medford, MA

Level: NCAA Division III

Conference: New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)

2016 record: 35-8

What it is: A big elephant.

5. The Furman University Paladins

Location: Greenville, SC

Level: NCAA Division I

Conference: Southern Conference (SoCon)

2016 record: 29-30

What it is: According to the Furman website, it's "a paragon of chivalry; a heroic champion; a strong supporter or defender of a cause; and any of the 12 peers of French emperor Charlemagne's court." Grand!

4. The Stetson University Mad Hatters

Location: DeLand, FL

Level: NCAA Division I

Conference: Atlantic Sun (ASUN)

2016 record: 28-32

What it is: We'll defer to Lewis and Walt on that.

3. The Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm

Location: Durant, OK

Level: NCAA Division II

Conference: Great American Conference (GAC)

2016 record: 29-25

What it is: Wind, rain, hail, thunder, lightning, and maybe an icy mix...not something you want to mess with. Seek shelter.

2. The Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels

Location: Atlanta, GA

Level: NCAA Division III

Conference: Southern Athletic Association (SAA)

2016 record: 20-23

What it is: A small seabird known for its gutsy, food-seeking flights low to perilous ocean waters. Even the Coast Guard is impressed by these little guys.

1. The Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes

Location: Scottsdale, AZ

Level: NJCAA Division II

Conference: Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC)

2016 record: 29-28

What it is: A tasty treat best served like this.

Also receiving votes: the UC Irvine Anteaters, the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, the Saint Louis University Billikens, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, and the Campbell University Fighting Camels

Think your team deserved to be included? Hey, no list is perfect. But if you shoot us a tweet with your team's nickname and a good reason why we shouldn't have left it off our list (hint: not "because our squad is nasty" or "because artichokes are gross"), we'll give you 10% off your next glove -- even if it's not your team at all and you just really like the nickname.
